Install the signed version of the MobileSitter software
This tutorial shows step by step how to install the signed version of the MobileSitter software.
Because this process is not simple and the instructions may differ in parts depending on the conditions of your mobile device (for example, if another language is used), this guide is intended for experienced users only.
Caution: It is absolutly necessary to make a backup copy of all your stored passwords using the MobileSitter's export feature before you install the signed version. After installation you must import this data to get all passwords back.
Background
Java midlets can be delivered both unsigned and signed. For signed midlets a higher trustworthiness is assumed. Therefore signed midlets usually have more rights on the mobile device, for example, in terms of reading and writing local files. By using the signed version of the MobileSitter you as a user get immediate benefit with respect to usability, since all security-related question of the midlet manager are suppressed when starting the software, selecting the license file, and importing and exporting of passwords.
In order to install and run signed midlets, however, the device must be able to verify the coresponding signature of the midlet. For this, a code-signing certificate is required, which is either already on your device or can be installed later. Some mobile operating systems, such as Window Mobile, offer the opportunity to install additional certificates.
Prerequisite for the use of signed MobileSitter variant is therefore a midlet manager, in which a new code-signing certificate can be installed. Good experience in this regard, we have done with the midlet manager Jbed because it relies on the Windows Mobile certificate store which can be extended.
Step 1: Download the code-signing certificate
To download the certificate and the signed MobileSitter version, please enter the MobileSitter Shop and choose "My Account".
In section "License, software and certificate download" click on "Download Certificates". Afterwards click on "Download".
Save the file "cacert2020.cer" on your PC and then transfer it to some directory on your mobile device.
Step 2: Download the signed MobileSitter variant
Now click on the "Back" button to get back into "My Account". In section "License, software and certificate download" click on "Download MobileSitter software".
Select the MobileSitter version that is appropriate for your device. Make sure that you select a version which is labeled as "signed".
Save the zip file with the MobileSitter software on your PC, then unzip the file and transfer the both files "mobilesitter.jad" and "mobilesitter.jar" to some directory on your mobile device.
Step 3: Certificate installation
To install the certificate on your device, navigate using the File Explorer into the directory where you have previously transferred the certificate. By clicking on the certificate file "cacert2020.cer" the installation process is performed.
Note: On some devices it may occur that the operation system prevents the installation of new certificates. In this case, it is necessary to adapt just a few registry entries in the Windows operating system. Please use a search engine, to get help for such problems in appropriate forums.
The following figures show the installation process. Please move your mouse over the images to view them enlarged.
Step 4: Review of the certificate installation in the midlet manager
Before the actual installation of the software, we will review the availability of the newly installed certificate in the Midlet Manager. For this, start the midlet manager on the device and select "Menu" --> "Certificates". After the successful installation, the list should contain a certificate whose name starts with "Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, DE" and which is checked.
Step 5: Install the MobileSitter software
Now install the signed MobileSitter version on your mobile device using the previously transmitted installation files "mobilesitter.jad" and "mobilesitter.jar".
In the midlet manager select "Menu" --> "Install" --> "Local Files". The midlet manager then searches for installable Java midlets on your device and displays them.
Choose to install the displayed entry MobileSitter.
Follow the installation process, by applying the proposed settings ( "Continue" --> "OK" --> "OK").
Attention: Please answer the question whether the midlet should be started after successful installation with "No". Some security settings have to be adjusted first. If you have accidentally started the midlet, you must close the MobileSitter and the midlet manager and restart the midlet manager afterwards.
Step 6: Adjustment of the security settings in the midlet manager
Before starting the MobileSitter software it is necessary to configure the security settings of MobileSitter midlet.
In the midlet manager, select "Menu" --> "Actions" --> "Security" and set the permissions to read and write local files (the last two items in the list of permissions) to "Always Allow".
Step 7: Start of the MobileSitter software
After successful installation of the MobileSitter software, you can start it by clicking the "MobileSitter" entry or by clicking on "Go". Finalize the installation by doing some configurations, such as the keyboard configuration, the selection of the license file, choosing the font size and possibly importing the previously exported passwords.
To start the MobileSitter software more easily, it is possible to create a MobileSitter shortcut in the Program Manager or to assign MobileSitter to a soft key on your device. Refer to the page described below.
