Selection of a new midlet manager
Here is some information on choosing a new midlet manager. The existing midlet managers from different manufacturers differ in various way: with respect fulfillment of the MobileSitter platform requirements, in their appearance, and in their support of comfort functions. When looking for a new midlet manager one should also consider the screen resolution of the device.
The following guidelines for midlet managers are based on our own tests and on the feedback of many MobileSitter users. We make no claim to completeness or correctness. Moreover, the recommendations should not be considered as an advertisement for one or another midlet manager, but only serve to support our customers. Also, we do not offer any midlet manager for download, but only provide their names and versions. If required, users are advised to contact the manufacturers of the MIDlet managers or to use search engines to find appropriate midlet managers.
- Esmertec JBed midlet manager
Good experience has been gained with the Esmertec Jbed midlet manager. In particular, it uses the Windows certificate store on their own, so that the signed version of the MobileSitter software can be used. It usually supports JSR75. We have been notified to the functionality of version 20070802.2.1 for devices with low screen resolution (240x320 pixels) and version 20090217.5.1R2 VGA for devices with high screen resolutions (480x640 pixels and more). - Tao-Intent midlet manager
In our tests, we partly found problems with the handling of key codes in the Tao Intent Midlet manager on Windows Mobile 5. In newer versions of this problem should be remedied. The signed version of the MobileSitter software could not be installed. For devices with QVGA resolution (240x320 pixels), we recommend the version 11.1.7.1036, which is can be downloaded from Softpedia.com. - Aplix-JBlend midlet manager
The JBlend midlet manager is particularly characterized by its adaptability with regard to font sizes. Furthermore, special versions for devices with high screen resolutions (from 480x600 pixels) have been provided. Some pre-installed versions of the JBlend midlet manager had no JSR75 support (e.g., on HTC HD2 with JBlend version 3.3.5-20090918.2.1). The JBlend version 3.3.5-20090727-5.1 was reported to be working.
There are other midlet managers, for example, Esmertec Jeodek and IBM J9, but on which we have no experience so far.
Installation of a new midlet manager
The following guide shows you step by step how to install a new midlet manager on your Windows Mobile device. We show the installation in the Jbed midlet manager on the mobile device HTC HD2. If you use a different midlet manager or have a different device some steps may vary.
Step 1: Transfer the installation file of the midlet manager
First, transfer the installation file of the midlet manager (here esmertec-jbed.cab) to some directory on your mobile device. The following figure shows the directory of the mobile device in Windows Explorer on the PC.
Move your mouse over the image to enlarge it.
Step 2: Install the Midlet Manager on the device
Start the File Explorer on your device and navigate to the directory into which you have previously transferred the installation file. Start the installation by running the installation file.
During the installation you are asked if you want to install the midlet manager on your device or on the memory card. To this question there is no binding recommendation. The decision depends both on your personal preferences and on other technical conditions (e.g. other installed midlet managers, properties of the installation file, etc.). Try your preferred option and chose the other in the case of an error message.
After successful installation a new shortcut icon to run the new midlet manager is located in the Program Manager of your device.
The following figures illustrate the installation process. Move the mouse over the images to view them enlarged.
