Creation of a MobileSitter Shortcut and Running the MobileSitter from a Soft Key

This manual shows step-by-step how to create a MobileSitter shortcut in the application menu of your Windows Mobile device and how to assign the MobileSitter software to a soft key on your home screen.

Since the steps in this manual require some experience with your device and may need to be adapted to the particular settings of your mobile device, this manual is intended for experienced users only.

Background Information

On Windows Mobile devices a so called Midlet Manager is responsible for managing and running of software which has been provided as Java Midlet. There are various Midlet Manager from different companies in the market. In general, the Midlet Managers do not provide a shortcut for an installed midlet within the application menu of the mobile device. Instead, in order to run a Midlet, you have to start the Midlet Manager first, and run the Midlet with the Midlet Manager afterwards. However this is cumbersome, especially for Midlets that are often used as for the MobileSitter software to access your passwords. The following manual shows how to manually create the missing shortcut using a trick and how to assign the MobileSitter application to a soft key on the home screen.

Since existing Midlet Managers have different management approaches and support different command line parameters, we show the solution as an example with two wide spread Midlet Managers:

  1. Tao Intent Midlet Manager
  2. Esmertec JBED Midlet Manager
  3. Aplix Corporation JBlend Midlet Manager

Depending on the provider and the manufacturer of your device, a different Midlet Manager may be installed on your device, which need a slightly different approach. Please use a search engine with the keywords "create midlet shortcut" to get some hints how to create a shortcut for your Midlet Manager. Normally, when using different Midlet Managers the approach may probably adapted by changing the commandline parameters of the shortcut file (see below), other steps may be applied without changes. The following description assumes that the MobileSitter software is already installed on your device.

Remark: According to our information, the current version of the Aplix JBlend Midlet Manager does neither support creating midlet shortcuts nor running midlets with a soft key.

Create a MobileSitter Shortcut with the Tao Intent Midlet Manager

Remarks to step 1:

  • This manual assumes that the Tao Intent Midlet Manager is installed at "\Windows\jmm.exe" by default. If the Midlet Manager is installed at a different location on your device, please adapt the path accordingly.
  • Please pay attention to the white spaces (marked with red circles in the picture above).
  • If you may change some text in the file (e.g. because the Midlet Manager is installed at a different location) you have to adapt the number at the beginning of the line. This number holds the number of characters after the hash symbol including all white spaces.

Rename the file "MobileSitter.txt" to "MobileSitter.lnk" using your Windows Explorer.

Confirm the Windows warning.

Step 2: Copy the Shortcut File

If you have already other midlets installed, you have to adapt the ID accordingly. You can derive the MobileSitter's ID by inspecting the file "\Windows\appdb\selector.utf" an reading the value of the attribute "root" (e.g. root=s3_).
